5Old FaithfulMay 05, 2010
By Alan B. Richards
This type of lamp is almost 200 years old. I've had a pair of these for over 20 years. I've used them for camping & hunting trips as well as power outages. And they have always been there. Unlike the dozens of newer electric or white gas (Coleman fuel) which have come & gone. And the kerosene will stay fresh in the tank for months. Yes, kerosene has a smell. Indoors a scented candle helps a lot. Outdoors you never notice it. Just make sure you put the lantern somewhere that it won't get knocked over. Or better still, hang it up by the hangers. No, it isn't as bright as a Coleman lantern. But it's a whole bunch cheaper, to buy and to use, than a Coleman. But then when you're camping, do you really want to light up the entire forest? As a signal light, this lantern can be seen all the way across a half mile lake. For the warm glow of a well felt camp nothing beats a fire. But when you can't have one, this lantern is the next best thing.

One note. This particular type lantern is meant for kerosene. It don't burn well with lamp oil. If you decide to use oil, replace the wicks with one's meant for oil use. The light won't be as bright but you won't have the smell. I'm a guy. I use kerosene.

5Great value for a great productAug 03, 2010

A great value for a great product; namely "Plan C" for lighting.

Oh, "Plan C" - Plan A is when there is power at the house and all is well; Plan B is when the power goes out I use flashlights. When and if the spare batteries are shot on the flashlights... "Plan C." This lantern.

I bought one to test out. It illuminates a small room and one can read with it.

With good quality fuel and with the wick properly adjusted (easy) there is absolutely NO odor or soot.

The only thing to point out is that if you happen to be a dim-wit like me and miss the clear directions to "not fill above this line" the fuel will leak out. Again, this was my bad.

I plan to buy a couple more of this same model along with spare wicks. Again: a great product for a great price.

5Easy Oil LightingDec 19, 2009
By Franklin5ive "Franklin5ive"
This oil lamp is probably my most used lamp. I hung it over my T.V. in the back-room and use it when I'm watching movies as it provides a nice dim light. Simply light and adjust the flame height. I find it very easy to re-fill with oil with either a vunnel or a wash bottle. My wife doesn't like the oil fumes but with a candle burning they don't seem to bother her. We live in an area that looses electricity several times a season (as do most of us I suppose), so we now have oil lamps in every room and three extra on the porch. The best idea for this style of lamp is to hang it with the attached hanger to make it impossible to knock over.
These lanterns are relatively inexpensive to buy and costs only pennies to use all night, about 6 hours. Cheaper than candles and not as dangerous to use. These lanterns are well constructed and very easy to light with my extended lighter, and just as easy to put out with a single blow. We have 3 of this style lantern hanging on the front porch for when we have company over and sit outside, they provide a nice friendly 'mood' atmosphere. The best 'patio-lanterns' ever. For the price and up-keep, you can't go wrong.

5Not a toyDec 30, 2010
By Rosc
Why amazon has this listed as a TOY I don't know. I don't let my kids play with fire.

Other than the miscategorization, this lantern is decent for the price. I wanted to note that the 1/2" wick is the size it comes with, for those wondering which wick is needed.

5Great lantern, great price.Oct 05, 2010
By J. L. Vaughan "MensaGirl"
LOTS of similar products cost a lot more. I bought 4. This was just what I wanted for patio table lighting for dinner on the patio. I love the red, adds a nice pop to our patio's overall look. I have NO idea why Amazon is asking me Qs about it as if it's a toy?? So you can ignore that I think it's 5 stars of "fun" or "educational," unless dinner on the otherwise dark patio is fun, and learning to light the lantern is educational...
