Great canteen for hiking or cyclingMay 28, 2010
By Ian B. Cooper I used this exact type of canteen on a year-long bicycle trip through Europe in 1984-85. Yes, the design is at least that old (probably 20 or so years older). I've never found a better canteen for keeping water cool on hot days. If you soak the cotton cover with water it absorbs the sun's heat and evaporates the water, cooling the water in the canteen. I've been on the road for hours with this canteen and (as long as I kept the cover moist) the water in it stayed cold due to evaporation. I've never found any other canteen that can keep the water in it so cool - not even 'Windchill' bottle covers designed to do just that.
The one downside to this product is that the dye in the cover leaches onto everything, so make sure you give it a good machine wash before using it, or your clothes will be stained green.

Great canteen, disappointing coverOct 10, 2009
By whamilton This is a great canteen, and shipped quickly and arrived in great condition. My only complaint is that I ordered it along with a canteen cup, also made by Rothco, and that this cup did not fit inside the cover provided with the canteen, nor did the cup fit snugly around the canteen itself. As such, I am keeping the cup nested outside the fabric and canteen, where it fits perfectly but blocks the belt loop. This is disappointing, but I still think this is a good product for the price and it will work just fine for my emergency kit.

Just what I wantedFeb 03, 2010

My wife bought me a stainless steel canister for $30 that I was unhappy with because the lid leaked unless I screwed it on really tight, and it always gets water on my hand when opening it. This inexpensive aluminum canteen doesn't leak at all, the lid is easier to use and is easier to drink out of. I use them in my car. The water seems to be cooler in the canteen than a plastic bottle.

The perfect canteenJul 07, 2009
By D. P. Constructed tough, cheap, a chain fixes the cap to the bottle, and the cover easily fits on a belt. What more could you want?

Don't BuyOct 05, 2010
By BAMBA, LA Ive received my Rothco canteen and im very dissapointed. At first I thought it was a a decent canteen. The cover was just ok. THe outside of the canteen was nice and shiny, but inside is a different story. Rust or oxydation has built up inside the canteen when I have water in it. I see particles floating in teh water. If I hadn't used a flashlight to see inside I might still be drinking out of it and making me sick. Don't buy this Chinese made pos. I suppose I can still use it as some kind of water tight container. BUT NOT TO DRINK!
